a big thanks to everybody who came out yesterday! we had a great time opening up the garage yesterday and accommodating eaters of tofu and carne asada at the grill. big ups to nexus and the occupy riders for bringing a crowd (as well as "the ruckus", as they say) and making our event the end point of one of their raids. also, cant forget clancy from the bike stand at sdsu, who just received a grant to expand their project. thanks to slowcraft maldoror for checking out the space and a certain secret individual from bic control.

time to stock up is, before its too late!

hello internet! if you are wondering what bikes del pueblo has been up to then let me catch you up. our tacocat alley cat race was a roaring success, we had fourteen contestants complete the race that circled the city. then we had our monthly third friday ride which ended at saigon noodle house on el cajon boulevard.

and what does the future have in store? well besides 2012 being yet another end of the world your local bike coop is busy planning some new events. for the next two weeks we will not be either at the city heights farmers market or at the snowdrop garage for the holidays, and the bike stand at san diego state university is on break until the next semester. however january 8th we return for our regular sunday hours, followed by a special bar b q/parillada (vegan friendly!) for some extra organizing and cleaning. the next week on january 15 our sunday hours will be followed by a craft party, making use of some of the less ridable parts we have laying around.

as far as rides go, this friday is the occupy san diego riders mall raid which starts in the middle of the day. january 20 is our third friday ride, the beginning of the end of the world theme ride! dress up, bring music, etc etc to celebrate the first month of the last year ever.

we will return in two weeks with our workshop hours at the farmers market and snowdrop garage, but before then keep riding and have a good christmas/kwanza/hannukah/new year/etc

found this online. apparently a group of activists with occupy san diego have started a bike committee! here is what they have going so far:

We meet for a ride, every Tuesday 8:30 PM, after G.A., at the Civic Center, 3rd and B St. We also have meetings on Tuesday at 5 PM, if you want to be involved with planning, bike maint., spoke card making, stenciling flags, etc. Hope to see all you bikers next week. another bike swap meet has come and gone and the faithful bikes del pueblo volunteers stuck it out against the rain. a big thanks to the velodrome for having us out there to do outreach and accept donations. the vendors and visitors were more than generous and we now have enough forks and 26" tires to build a house. but we won't because instead we're opening up a new day.

this sunday, 11/13/11, chris is opening up the workshop at snowdrop house from noon to 3pm. the bike polo club from high tech high is working on making up the extra hours from 3 to 6pm at least once or twice a month. we're hoping to make sundays a regular day for both classes and open workshop time. being at the house we have extra resources like the welder, more spare parts, and truing stand, that aren't available at our farmers market locations. sundays should be a big thing.

just another round of updates and general news. if you didnt know already the annual dia de los muertos ride put on by the cretins is coming up. 8pm @ gala in south park, expect fun.

this december 9 is bdp's first ever alley cat ride, the tacocat! its still in the works but we're doing our best to combine bike racing and taco shops. meets at the big fountain 8pm, save a few bucks by registering early. we are also looking for sponsors, so if your business or org would like to be part of supporting local bike projects please contact us!

this last month was historical not only for obvious reasons (like occupy wall street and the second failed end of the world prediction in one year) but also for the opening of the aztec bike stand! a new volunteer clancy has started a new day at sdsu's farmers market. every thursday from noon to three tools and experience are available to keep you riding.

as usual we are always looking for new volunteers for both saturdays and thursdays as well as anybody who would like to start their own day. our garage is cleaned up and ready for action and registration is open for mechanics classes (see top right of page).

third friday ride rides again!

we have a lot of projects

its been a long time since our last update, a little too long. so here it is: the third friday ride! this friday, the 21st starting around 8pm at tribute to mankind cafe! last month we did a loop from north park to lincoln high school and back via ocean view. this month we're thinking of visiting the occupy wall street protests before going a little further south.

as far as news, we're still out at the city heights farmers market but we've started a new partnership with a crew from sdsu. every thursday during the farmers market at san diego state our man clancy is heading up a mini-kitchen with a handful of tools and a stand right next to the e3 booth where they power music by bike. more news to come on that soon.

in the next few days we'll also have a bike for sale: an 80s or 90s centurion with sante and 105 components, probably about a 56, thanks to the hard work of our mechanic ladule. pictures soon.

so far it is pretty amazing, people just post when theyre going on a ride. organized rides and even spur of the moment rides are put up on this thing. which reminds me, tonight there is the seek and destroy monday ride starting at the new shop brooklyn bicycles (3437 adams ave) leaving around 7:30. its a fast paced ride with a different route each time, so be prepared if you plan on heading out

on a recent trip up to the bay area (which bay area? this one!) i made a stop at one of oakland's bike coops, spokeland. its a beautiful little space on a shared corner with a garden and the art barn, right down the street from donut farm, which is a must if you're a vegan like me.

joven, a former bdp volunteer and bike messenger who now lives in the bay, took me to spokeland. its a pretty low traffic shop, open two days a week plus the first saturday of the month, but its beautifully put together and the volunteers are more than friendly and helpful. bonus: one of them is a semi-pro comic artist.

hopefully when bikes del pueblo gets a space (any day now, fingers crossed, we'll find something) it will be as well put together as the one those fine people at spokeland have put together. if you're even in the east bay spokeland is a must see.

not a coop but nonetheless a rad shop is recycle bicycle, a used bike shop that allowed us to dig through piles of old parts and borrow tools to hook up our own brakes outside. altogether the bay is a great spot for bikes, not only because its geographically easy to get around, they have great bike lanes, and accessible public transit, but because everywhere you look there are friendly people willing to lend a hand. shoutout to roberto from michoacan who let us borrow his hand pump on the side of the road.

this tuesday bdp is going to be at the colina park night out, an event to build trust within the community and with law enforcement (yeah, i know). tuesday from five to eight, jay is going to be meeting and greeting.

and august 13 is the save our barrios fest, an event put on by a local coalition to raise awareness about the changes in barrio logan and gentrification's effects on local communities. it runs from five to ten at 2972 Clay St so come out, its all ages and got a few bands on the line up.

august 13 also happens to be the next full moon ride, which leaves this time from rosie ogrady's pub on adams ave at ten o clock.

and of course the long awaited courteous mass is august 12. this is a super important ride, hopefully it will draw a good turn out and bring in some positivity.

the sheldon brown birthday ride takes off!

have you heard the big news? bdp has a new exciting forum! we're experimenting with all new types of communication, everything from email lists to smoke signals and bee dancing. but so far i think the best two are blogging and face to face communication. lets see how this forum works out. what i like about it is that we can have discussions that we can save for later and that are accessible to the any reader, and if we say good things then its like we're creating a resource! a history! a manual! the success of projects like sdbikecommuter.com make it seem like this just might have a chance.

in other news, bikes > jets, the bike union is biking to brunch, the next full moon ride is planned out, the bike coalition has a new director, and next month is the critical manners/courteous mass ride! and of course, those fabulous people paseo urbano down in tijuana are going to have another paseo de todos the first of the month.

jay, ken, stace, and michelle all just got back an hour ago from attending bike!bike!, the international bike coop conference. it was held this year in san marcos, tx, and it was a beautiful few days full of workshops, swimming, rides, and dancing with 150+ bike kitchen organizers from all over the country. so this wednesday we are having a catch-up/recap meeting and everybody is invited.

one thing that came out of the conference that sticks to mind is an effort to revamp the bike coops wiki, and to help out the bikes del pueblo page has been updated! if you are a tech savy person and would like to contribute please get in touch

great weekend! thanks to everybody who went down to paseo de todos, put on by the amazing people of paseo urbano de tijuana. a whole group of san diegans stormed the blue line from bikes del pueblo and the bike union, joined the ride, which is probably the most organized thing ive ever seen, and then promptly ate some tacos afterward.

saturday was a great day at the market as we guided a new volunteer through some of our most common problems, and it all ended sunday with the vegan mac n cheese bakeoff organized by linda and andres which raised over $100

tuesday the 8th, proposal writing time!

two of bikes del pueblo's exceptionally gifted young volunteers just met with a representative from a certain local bike coalition to talk about possibilities, resources, and expanding our operation within san diego. to do this we need to put together a proposal by march 23rd detailing what our goals are and how we want to reach them. things like what materials we need, how we plan on operating, circumstances to take into consideration (volunteer coordinating, fundraising, etc), all of this needs to be in writing and presentable. if you would like to be part of this process to share ideas or lessons learned please stop by. here are the details:

IRC build-a-bike-a-thon + south east farmers market

the next build-a-bike-a-thon for the IRC is february 13th at 2754 snowdrop over there in city heights. probably between 1 and 4 pm like last time. this is a good way to get acquainted with all the parts of a bike, even if you have no experience, all the while helping local refugees get around town. you can bring your own tools, but if you it might be a good idea to mark them just in case.

also, starting in two weeks (actually, like 11 days now i guess) we're going to start operating out of the south east farmers market! so come on out to help, if you live in the area and need help drop in, and just in general spread the word.

a few hours ago a few a few motivated youths gathered together to talk about the future of bikes del pueblo. this is a little bit of what we worked out:

we are mere inches away from having our own spot. keep tuned for further updates on that

every third sunday of every second month we will be fixing up bikes for the irc. see calendar for dates

next month (february) we will start up the monthly bike rides every second saturday from the farmers market

january 23rd is the edible bike ride, which will leave from downtown and tour different local food hot spots before winding up at trolley barn park, where some bikes del pueblo hot shots will give a schpeel and demo

a two part city-wide tour of all the coops and collective houses in san diego is in the planning. so far we expect to split the rides up so that we can cover mid-city neighborhoods west of the 805 in the first ride then the second ride go east of the 805 into south east san diego

we may be included in a grant that will supply us with some new tools.

Velo Cult Bike Shop is hosting a pre-ride social @ 6:00pm at which they will be debuting their new line of speciality coffees (and there will be cocoa for those who are already too high-strung). Decorate your bike, bring your lights, don't forget the camera, and enjoy a casual, conversational social ride to admire the handiwork of folks with electric bills larger than yours!

some recent surprises have come out in the last few weeks, we have money for rent and be able to open up a space for the bike kitchen much sooner than we thought. during our latest meeting we discussed the pros and cons of different locations and decided ideally we would like to open up a storefront along university or el cajon between city heights and north park/normal heights in order to be accessible to the bike community at large.

we have also discussed partnerships with local businesses, bike shops, bike gangs, and advocacy groups such as the bike union and bike coalition.

as for how a space could function, we set out some basic ideas as tentative guidelines. we would like to ask for a donation of $5 a day to use the space and tools or a $20 monthly membership, all which would be on a sliding scale. members of other bike groups and students would receive a discount, and volunteering or work trade could be done in place of a donation.

additionally we would like to hold workshops, some that would double as volunteer training, and use the space for art projects or shows. within the organization we would like to have keyholders or core members who switch positions and have a minimum mechanical experience and volunteers who could become core members over time. all members and volunteers get to participate in meetings and decisions. volunteers would be there to fix bikes to sell, assist visitors during open hours, and keep the space running in general.

hours would be based on keyholder availability, and occasional events would be manned by volunteers and members.

IN OTHER NEWS we discussed the new south east farmers market, which we are set to begin friday afternoons once we get them a nice letter with our mission statement.

we have also begun thinking about writing a mission statement.

la fieldtrip recap + meeting reminder

yesterday was the la fieldtrip, and with a packed car we took off and visited bikerowave, bicicocina, and bike oven. we'd like to thank everybody from all three spaces for taking the time to talk to us, sharing everything they knew with us as we slowly and gratingly picked at their brains, and for letting us hang out. i personally would not like to thank pure luck, a restaurant across from bicicocina, for being expensive and having small burritos. i dont know how things run in la, but i expect a larger burrito for that much, even if it is at a fancy vegan place.

our team of scribes took extensive notes at each location, on everything from selling used parts to asking donations to sign in sheets and different levels of volunteering and running/opening a space. keep posted and/or shoot us an email because we'd really like to plan another work day as soon as possible and set time aside to talk about coordinating and opening a space.

this last sunday's bike work day was a great success! thanks to everybody who came out to help, we put together i think 5 bikes for the irc and cleared out a little space in the garage. plus even more neighbors and housemates from the snowdrop house stopped by to say hello and hang out. not to mention there was some really good food. below is a quick video that brian put together.

help share bikes with the rest of san diego

last saturday was a fairly slow day, so kelly, andres, brian, and myself all sat down and devised a plan of action. bikes del pueblo has been around for a few years and for most of that the various members have decided to keep it low key for various reasons. Among our concerns were being part of gentrification and compromising our work with more marginalized members of the community (city heights is a mostly immigrant, refugee, and non-english neighborhood). but we have decided that in order for bikes del pueblo to stay around and be accessible to the community and sustainable it needs to expand. so here are the main steps to what we would like to do:

1 bring in more people. we are going to begin outreach into san diego's growing and amazing bike community for volunteers, ideas, partnerships and solidarity, and hopefully new resources and energy needed to expand our collective. this is also where we need to look for anybody who can speak other languages such as burmese, kurini (sp?), swahili, vietnamese, etc.

2 general outreach. bdp needs to talk to all types of community orgs, businesses, community spaces and even rec centers, and maybe even schools. in the meantime we would like to form partnerships for collaborative events, maybe store materials/tools at a business or use their space when they are closed, set up mini workshops such as bike sheds, or even do assemblies at schools.

3 educate ourselves! this would include workshops to train new volunteers in basic bike maintenance, workshops on how to work with people who speak a different language, and awesome team building workshops like trips to tijuana and critical mass. we also want to network with other bike collectives and coops, steal their secrets and see how they do things. the first saturday of december is a field trip to la to see a few spaces out there and everybody is invited.

4 find a place of our own! eventually we would like to settle down, find a nice home, even if that means writing grants or selling plasma. but we know that step 4 of our master plan requires more volunteers, more connections, and more knowledge, thats why it is step 4.

We were able to gather more than 20 unused bicycles and numerous bicycle parts throughout the day. IRC clients will receive the bicycle after they participate in a safety training course presented by the San Diego Bicycle Coalition.

We are also looking to spend a weekend refurbishing old bikes to distribute. If you are interested in donating unused bicycle or participating in building used bikes, please email Hong.Tran@theirc.org for more information.

Lastly, thank you San Diego Velodrome for hosting IRC at their event, Ken Egby from Bikes del Pueblo for coming out to help with the drive, and San Diego Bicycle Coalition for presenting the bicycle safety classes!

irc bike drive + bike union haul in rescheduled

so i know everybody noticed the weather lately. the horribly inconsistent annoying rain we've gotten. because of rain the bike union's fall haul in and picnic is rescheduled for november 7th, still at trolley barn park. the really really free market is the next weekend, november 13th, same place.

in other news: the irc, partnering with bikes del pueblo, is starting a bike drive to help refugees in the area build bikes for their own use. this halloween from 9 am to 2 pm @ the velodrome swap meet we will be out collecting donations and looking for volunteers. if you have wanted to volunteer but could never make it saturdays this might be your chance, so shoot an email to Hong.Tran@theirc.org

dia de los muertos!

this oct 30th the farmers market is celebrating dia de los muertos with special music, dancers, and food, in addition to the regular awesomeness that is the CHFM. to participate bikes del pueblo will be building our own altar for lost and stolen bikes, as well as a mini ghost/skeleton bike for cyclists who have been hit. if you would like to remember a bike long past or leave an offering for somebody you knew stop by and add on to our altar.

dont forget, the night before is critical mass and the next friday night is paseo de todos in tijuana. see you all out on the street!

350 bike ride recap!

today was the second and final 350 bike ride. the first ride yesterday at the farmers market was fun and relaxed. a small turnout for the ride (at least of people who showed up on time) but plenty of extra people came by to say hi and work on their bikes. everybody got free totes and an exclusive bike zine put together by myself (ken), holly from sdsu, and fernanda of irc infamy.

the ride today starting at ward canyon park had a decent turnout of young college kids and a handful of old bike guys. we started off around 1:30, met up with a protest at a local valero over prop 23, and went down park blvd ending at pokez. if you werent there you missed out.

ok, so two big things happening at the same place at the same time! first i'd like to announce the sd bike union's fall picnic, called the bike union because they are dedicated to doing as much as possible by bike. thanks to ted, one of our newer bikes del pueblo associates, for sharing this and inviting us. i believe that we will be out with some tools hopefully and ready to share some skills.

going on mere feet away will be the really really free market! the best place to come get something you can use for free and leave something you dont need anymore for somebody else.

i hope to see you all out there! and just a reminder: october 9th and 10th are the bike rides against climate change. what a busy two weeks!

350 bike rides against climate change!

put this in your planner: october 9th and 10th bikes del pueblo along with the IRC and some friends are putting together group rides to raise awareness of climate change. the rides are part of the 350 campaign, and will be coinciding with actions taken all over the world. the first ride on october 9th will be at 10am starting at the city heights farmers market and will be a slow paced tour of the neighborhood. the next ride will start around 1pm at ward canyon park on adams ave and will be around 7 or 10 miles, depending on how everybody feels, and will go around the mid-city area and end at toronado in north park. below is an unfinished flier, a finished one will be up shortly

Also new: BDP is planning two bike rides during October for 350 day to spread awareness of global climate change and hopefully encourage more direct action against it. Meetings are going to be held every Friday during the evening at the Snowdrop house for the next four weeks to get this all together.

attention all upstanding citizens, volunteers, group bike ride bike riders, city heights farmers marketers, bicycle activists, and food eaters: the next bikes del pueblo meeting is set for friday September 10th, which should be the second friday of the month. its going to be around 6 pm, which is, as i'm sure you know, dinner time, so there will be food but a little extra here and there won't hurt if you can bring some. hopefully we can keep the discussion short, manage to develop a solid plan of action, and maybe have a ride afterward or something. this will all be taking place at the snowdrop house in city heights, contact us if you would like the address

fantastic news: even though Bikes Del Pueblo will not be setting up this week to help with bikes the amazing Tina Angeles will be leading a ride from the farmer's market! the route is yet to be determined but i am sure it will be great.

bikes del pueblo will not be at the city heights farmers market the next two weeks, 8/14 and 8/21. but we will be back right after. the monthly bike rides should resume every second saturday (10 am @ chfm) hopefully this october. our next group ride event should be in october as well.
